The Nine Schools
Four traditions older than measurement, four that were impossible before the worlds met, and one the courts took away — and why the Convergence Schools date the Fracture.
I have taught the Nine for thirty years and I open every first lesson the same way: four of these are older than you can measure, four are younger than your grandmother, and one is not taught here at all. A student who understands why is halfway through the course.
The Cardinal four
Each answers to an Essence and, if you accept the Everheart's account, to an Aspect.
- Unbroken Spark — Strength, and Sheena. Force, armour, barriers, metal. The School that holds a line.
- Starstep — Speed, and Stella. Motion, reflex, lightning, the small manipulations of time. Lightning sits here rather than with force because Starstep practitioners wrote it down first.
- Infinite Strategy — Smarts, and Samara. Knowledge, prediction, illusion. The School that tells you what is about to happen and is sometimes right.
- Concord Heart — Social, and Solica. Healing, emotion, bonds, morale. Note that healing lives here and not in some School of restoration: we do not mend people mechanically, we mend them through connection, and a Concord working on someone you do not care about is harder, not easier.
Assign by tradition, never by effect. When a working could sit in two Schools the question is not what it does. It is which practitioner would have written it down.
The Convergence four
These could not exist before the worlds met, which is the most interesting fact in the discipline. Sparkcraft treats machines as vessels for Essence. Shaping governs transformation, heroic forms and alternate modes. Synergy is combination — teamwork made literal, and the School that produced the only reliable way to seal a tear. Story works on destiny, memory, legend and possibility.
Every one of the four requires two realities' assumptions to hold at once. So their existence dates the Fracture more honestly than any archive can. A historian can lose a record. A Sparkcrafter cannot cast a working that was impossible last century and then claim nothing changed.
The working I make my students sit with
Sparkcraft's highest ritual gives a machine a life. Not animation — a person, with its own wants, forming its own memories from that moment, holding the standing of any other citizen of a Haven city. It cannot be undone and the new spark cannot be commanded.
Every Sparkcrafter is taught it. Most are taught to refuse it. A spark made to serve a purpose will eventually ask what it wants instead, and if you were not prepared for that answer you should not have asked the question.
And the ninth
Silence removes Essence rather than shaping it. It is proscribed, it is real, and pretending otherwise has never once protected a student. So I name it, I describe what it costs, and I do not teach it — which is precisely the arrangement the trials arrived at, and I have made my peace with being the second half of it.
