The Crossing
The door always opens; the Crossing only decides how much of you arrives. Anchored, charted and wild doors, the five outcomes, and why the one who sings goes last and alone.
The door always opens. I need you to understand that before anything else, because every party I have guided arrives at a tear expecting a test of whether they get through. It is not that. You get through. The Crossing decides how much of you does.
Three kinds of door
An anchored door is one somebody is holding — an anchor-ring, a bondweaver choir, a Ferrum ember-core braced against the frame. It is the safe way to travel and it is the way you rarely get, because holding a door costs someone something every hour it stays held.
A charted door is one a person has been through and written down. My trade. It is honest work: a chart does not make a crossing safe, it makes it known.
A wild tear is fresh, or invented. Calculus Ruin produces doors its equations required rather than found, and those are the worst of all, because the far side has not settled on where it is. Nobody charts a wild tear. We record that it was there.
What the current asks of you
The destination pulls, and which part of you it pulls on depends on that world's Essence. A Strength current tries to take you apart on the way and you hold together or you do not. A Speed current runs the corridor faster than you can and expects you to land on your feet. A Smarts current changes the local law as you arrive and dares you to keep relying on the old one. A Social current is the gentlest and the strangest: it is safest when the group shares one honest verse, which means it is testing whether you are a group at all.
The five ways to arrive
Clean, and you are where you meant to be, when you meant to be there. That is the whole of the good outcome and travellers undervalue it.
Shaken is the common failure: you arrive fogged, slow to your first decision on the far side, and right again by the end of the scene. Most crossings that go wrong go wrong this way.
Scattered puts you somewhere else and frightened — a scene late, or across the settlement from anyone who could tell you what happened.
Echoed is where it stops being an inconvenience. You arrive frightened, and something of you does not: a Memory Echo stays in the corridor with your face and your history and no further instruction. What it does with the life it remembers is nobody's decision now.
Unmade is the fumble. You arrive as the Echo. For a while nothing solid will take your hand, and only the people who already know you can see you at all.
Who crosses badly
Living Machines and Hybrid Sparks suffer through anything but an anchored door. The corridor does not respect hardware. A Ferrum ember-core cancels that outright and then some — carry one and you cross better than the rest of us, which is why it is the most valuable salvage in the trade.
The verse
If one traveller spends their crossing leading the song, everyone else rides easier. Tideward taught us this and Concordia Vale proved it holds outside Tideward water. The cost is not hidden and it is not small: the one holding the verse goes last, and goes alone.
"Chart the door, brief the party, sing them through, and count heads on the far side. If the count is right the first time, you have had a good day. I have had eleven."
