Start hereThe Essence Nexus
Turn your device sideways for a larger slide.
Twenty-one worlds have collided around a crystal called the Everheart.
This is everything you need before your first session — about ten minutes, nothing to memorise.
The Nexus is a palace outside time, and its walls are doors. Twenty-one charted worlds open onto it, so swords, starships, and living magic end up in the same corridor. Your champion is one of the few people who can walk between them.
Crossing between worlds can leave pieces of you behind. Where two realities overlap, the local laws rewrite whatever stands in them. Every win here is paid for.
You do not begin as the saviour of anything. You begin hungry, borrowed, or newly arrived — and you earn the rest at the table.
Which door you take, who you steady mid-crossing, and what you leave behind — that is the story.
No outside reading required. Everything you need is on these slides.
In a single day, doors opened on every charted world — places where a person can walk out of one reality into another and arrive alive. Twelve years on, not one of them has closed.
Everyone dates their calendar from that day and calls it the Fracture. Nobody agrees on what caused it: a Calculus Ruin equation that needed a door to finish, an Ouroboros purchase from something outside, or Essara coming apart so her four Aspects could survive.
Year 12 of the Bleed
Doors open on every charted world. Ferrum logs the first. Concordia logs thirty-one before anyone counts.
People cross because staying is worse. One traveller in six arrives changed. “Survivor” turns out to be the wrong word.
Some arrivals cannot step through a doorway uninvited. They died in the corridor and kept walking. Every census is rewritten in a panic.
A Ferrum crew holds a door open on purpose. Trade follows. So do tariffs, queues, and the argument about who pays.
Settlements grow around stable doors. Nexus Prime becomes the market where physics, law, and language all compromise.
The Ninth School is proscribed in public teaching. Licensed workings remain — and leave less in the world than they find.
Bleed Cartographers map tears. Wild doors still invent themselves. Twenty-one worlds earn a place on the official chart.
The doors are still open. Essara still cannot enter a living universe whole. Champions still walk the currents.
Nobody at the table needs to memorise this. It is here so you know every grudge is younger than the Fracture — and still sharp.
Essence is the force behind courage, invention, motion, and trust. It runs in four currents, each with an Aspect who speaks for it — and every roll you make leans on one of them.
Sheena the Unbreakable. Endurance, protection, resolve. Hold the line.
Stella the Ever-Moving. Motion, change, decisive action. Answer first.
Samara the All-Knowing. Invention, strategy, discovery. See the pattern.
Solica the Heartbound. Trust, identity, shared purpose. Bind a crew.
She cannot enter a living universe without tearing it apart. She sends visions, opens doors, and trusts mortals with the rest. The four Aspects are what remains of her — or what she became. Accounts disagree.
“Sheena gives us the strength to endure. Stella gives us the speed to answer. Samara gives us the wisdom to understand. Solica gives us a reason to stand together.”
The part of Essara that gives the multiverse stability. Patient, protective, and stubborn enough to hold when every world says fall.
“Strength is not measured by what you can destroy, but by what you refuse to let fall.”
The force that keeps time flowing and lets the multiverse answer danger. Bold, competitive, and already moving while everyone else debates.
“There is always a moment when someone must move first. Be ready when it becomes yours.”
Essara's mind and keeper of multiversal history. Calm, analytical, and secretive enough to ask whether every truth should be used.
“Knowledge reveals what can be done. Wisdom asks whether it should be.”
The living bond that lets individuals, teams, and worlds understand one another. She sees every promise as a bright thread worth protecting.
“No world survives because its people are identical. It survives because they choose to stand together.”
Everheart — the crystal core outside time. Currents meet here. Champions answer its call.
Nexus Prime — the Haven city of markets, anchor-rings, and arguments that never end.
Charted worlds — twenty-one realities with doors someone has walked and written down.
The Bleed — the between. Merged physics, Memory Echoes, and corridors that test what you are.
Wild tears — doors nobody charted. Some were invented by an equation. Far sides have not settled.

Your campaign can stay behind one door or cross all twenty-one. Learn each world when it matters — the Nexus rewards curiosity.
Where two realities touch, their laws do not average out. They meet at a seam — and the seam is where everything interesting, and everything dangerous, happens.
Stay in it too long and it edits you, a little at a time, for good. A spell is an assumption about how the local world works. In the Bleed, say the assumption out loud before you bet your life on it.
The door always opens. You get through. The Crossing only decides how much of you arrives.
Held by a ring, choir, or ember-core. The safe way — and the way you rarely get.
Someone has been through and written it down. The default for a party with a map.
Fresh, or invented by an equation. The far side has not settled on where it is.
The destination's Essence picks the skill you roll: Brawn, Acrobatics, Alertness, or Persuasion. Singing together steadies a Social crossing — but whoever leads the song rolls last, and alone.
Frightened travellers can leave a piece of themselves in the corridor. Echoes answer to their names. They remember their families. They cannot cross a threshold they were not invited through.
Echo-Born carry a legal status drafted in a panic. Every Haven city reads it differently. Treat them as people — and as a reminder that crossings are never free.
Anchored doors have queues, tariffs, and arguments about who holds the ring tonight. News arrives sideways — a song from Concordia, a briefing from Meridian, a drydock log from Ferrum.
Flux cells, Mantle shards, and Astran alloy cost more than most Haven workers earn in a season. The loadout on your character's back is often the most valuable thing they own.
Spellwork is rare, costly, and watched. Silence is licensed by name. A working in the street is a story people tell for years — and sometimes a court case.
Temples, academies, and strike teams swear to Sheena, Stella, Samara, or Solica. Faith here is operational doctrine as often as it is comfort.
Which is why a mobile crew who can survive a wild tear is remarkable. Ordinary folk cannot simply leave. You can.
Most campaigns begin in the middle of history, not at its climax. Here is the weather when you step outside.
Calculus Ruin equations keep computing. Ouroboros buys the impossible. Cartographers mark tears that were not there yesterday.
Echo-Born status remains contested. Haven cities argue tariffs. Worlds that never meant to meet keep meeting — and blaming the Nexus for it.
Ask your GM which world you start on and what people are afraid of right now.
Nobody expects you to memorise these. Ask at the table — that is what session zero is for.
Presents the Nexus, plays everyone you meet, and referees the rules. They are not your opponent.
Each of you plays one Nexus champion — a person trying to matter across colliding worlds. Describe what they do and why.
“The charted door sings off-key. Something waited on the far side.”
Cartographer: I listen for which law changed.
GM: Roll Alertness — this is a Smarts current.
Cartographer: *rolls* Gravity is lying about down.
The GM frames a scene. You answer in character. When the outcome is in doubt, the dice decide.
Roll a d20 and your skill die. Add them. That total is the attempt.
The GM sets a difficulty. Match or beat it and you succeed. Miss it and the story moves anyway.
Edge rolls 2d20 and keeps the highest. Snag keeps the lowest. Shifts move your skill die up or down the track.
That is the engine. Everything else is your character sheet telling you which die to add.
The world that made you — Havenborn, Starstep Courier, Living Machine, Echo-Born, and more. It shapes how doors treat you.
Strength, Speed, Smarts, or Social — Sheena's Path, Stella's, Samara's, or Solica's. Broad callings, not job titles.
One sentence is enough: “a courier who has never refused a wild tear.” Your GM and table fill in the rest.
You start as someone the Everheart noticed — not someone who has already saved it. That is the point.
You know the Nexus. You know the doors.
Now make someone who belongs in it — and walk through.
