The Null Reach
The unmaking between realities, Entropy damage, and the truth about Memory Echoes: most of them are travellers who crossed badly, and they remember your name.
My work is going into the Null Reach and coming back with less than I could have. People find that a strange way to describe a profession. It is the only honest one.
What the Reach is
Not a place. The unmaking between realities — the space the doors pass through, which has no laws of its own and dissolves anything that stays in it long enough to need some. It was always there. The Fracture did not create it. The Fracture gave it thresholds.
Damage out of the Reach is its own kind and behaves accordingly: what it takes off you does not close on its own, and the usual remedies decline to engage with it. Practitioners call it Entropy. Field medics call it the cold sort and treat it separately.
Memory Echoes
Understand where these actually come from, because the broadsheet version is wrong and the wrong version gets people killed.
An Echo is usually a traveller. Somebody crossed badly — frightened past the point where the corridor would let go of them — and part of them stayed behind while the rest arrived. That is the common case. It happens in daylight, to ordinary people, and it is why every guide worth hiring counts heads on the far side.
The rarer kind is what the Reach returns on its own: figures out of collapsed timelines, events that were erased and did not accept it. The Phantom Expanse produces these without a crossing at all. But if you meet an Echo in a Haven city, the odds are overwhelming that it walked out of a door behind somebody, and that somebody is alive and does not know.
They remember you. That is the part nobody prepares for. An Echo of someone you travelled with knows your name, your habits, and what you said in the corridor.
Entropy Beasts and Paradox Storms
Entropy Beasts are the Reach given an appetite — amalgams of unravelled matter that feed where energy and feeling concentrate, which in practice means settlements. A beast does not besiege a town. It dissolves a street and moves on, and what it took does not come back when it leaves.
Paradox Storms are temporal fray weather. They sweep, they loop, and they populate themselves with Echoes drawn out of whatever the storm is chewing on. Survivable with preparation. Lethal without.
"Do not enter a Paradox Storm without a phase anchor on every member of the party. It is one working, it costs almost nothing, and it is the first thing anyone forgets. A single misstep can hold a squad in thirty seconds of their own worst battle until the storm tires of them."

On sealing, and on what I do instead
A Null Reach breach can be closed. The working exists, it is the reason the Ascendant tier is taught at all, and against a breach of this kind it is the hardest test the discipline sets. Fail it and the tear widens by half, and something on the other side registers that you tried.
Most of what I bring back is not sealed. It is destroyed. There is a standing argument between my trade and the archivists about whether a relic too dangerous to hold is still evidence. They say I am burning the record. I say the record is the reason the last three went unburned.
