The Four Relics and Their Copies
Half the gear in a Haven market is named after an Aspect's relic. They are copies made by people who never saw the originals — and they work a little. Here is why.
My shield is a forty-credit buckler with a rude maker's mark and it is called an Unbroken Core Shield, which it is not. The Unbroken Core is carried by an Aspect. This is a copy of a thing I have never seen, made by somebody who has never seen it either.
It has kept nine people alive. I would like to explain how that is possible, because I have heard the sneering version and the sneering version is wrong.
The originals
Four, one to each Aspect. The Unbroken Core, Sheena's. The Starstep Blade, Stella's. The Concord Heart, Solica's. The Infinite Archive, Samara's. Nobody in any Haven market has handled one. The Everheart does not lend.
The copies
And yet: a Concord Heart Charm on a quartermaster's shelf for thirty-five credits, rose-pink, which once a day will hand an ally a little more grace in a conversation than they had earned. Starstep Boots, thirty, threaded with speed-runes by somebody in a workshop in the Prism Ward. An Infinite Archive Slate that cross-indexes local lore against Aspect records and is right often enough to keep buying. My buckler.
None of them were forged by anyone who has seen the original. All of them work a little. That is the fact requiring explanation.
Why they work at all
The Vale has understood this longer than the rest of us and we have been slow to take the lesson, because it arrives sounding like sentiment. In Concordia Vale, Resonance is power generated when people freely choose trust or loyalty over the easier path — and it is not a metaphor there. It is load-bearing. Compelled agreement produces nothing at all; a promise freely made changes the weather.
A devotional replica is that, in metal. The maker believed in the thing they were copying. The buyer believes in the thing they are carrying. Somewhere in that, a small real effect — not the Aspect's power, nobody serious claims that, but not nothing, and not fraud.
Which is why the counterfeits that fail are always the cynical ones. A Spire workshop ran a line of Concord Heart Charms on the theory that the shape was what mattered. They were beautifully made. They did nothing whatsoever, the workshop could not work out why, and I do not think anyone ever managed to explain it to them.
What I actually carry
Names. Every person this shield has brought off a field is scratched into the inside of it, which is a common enough practice and nothing anyone would remark on.
Three seasons ago a name appeared that I did not put there. I met her eleven days later, in the Neon Dunes, in a column I had not been assigned to. She is alive. There are two more on the inside of my shield that I have not met.
I have shown it to an Archive investigator, a Sparkcrafter and a priest of Sheena, and I have been given three confident and incompatible explanations. What I do is check the inside of the shield before I take a contract, and go where the names are.
"It is not the relic. It never was. It is that somebody made this believing it would help, and I carried it believing the same, and between the two of us that turned out to be enough metal."
